Pituitary Adenoma

Treatments

A pituitary adenoma is a non-cancerous tumour that develops on the pituitary gland. It can grow large, causing pressure on surrounding areas and interfering with the gland's normal hormone production. These non-cancerous tumours can hinder the normal functions of pituitary glands. The pituitary gland produces several hormones that regulate various bodily functions including growth, metabolism, reproduction, and stress response.

Pituitary adenomas can affect individuals of any age. Pituitary adenomas are of two types microadenomas and macro adenomas. Micro adenomas are small tumours that are less than 1 cm and macro adenomas are big tumours that are more than 1 cm long. Beyond micro and macro pituitary adenoma there is another one that produces hormones in huge amounts, creates hormonal imbalances, and exhibits certain symptoms.

Pituitary adenomas, classified into prolactinomas, growth hormone-secreting adenomas, ACTH-secreting adenomas, and non-functioning adenomas based on hormone production, present varying symptoms. These may include headaches, vision issues, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, and menstrual changes. While the exact cause remains unknown, DNA mutations are implicated, leading to abnormal cell growth in the pituitary gland. Additionally, some cases may be hereditary.

The precise cause of pituitary adenomas is not fully understood, but mutations in DNA are believed to play a role. These mutations lead to abnormal cell growth and multiplication within the pituitary glands. Symptoms of pituitary adenomas can vary depending on the type of tumour and the hormones it produces. Common symptoms include headaches, vision problems, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, and changes in menstrual cycles.
